Nichols Creek Field Trip

We had the wonderful opportunity to accompany a friend and retired DNR ecologist on a delightful hike in a nearby nature preserve.
It was a little slice of paradise, I do believe.

crystal clear babbling brooks that never stop all year round

teaching about compasses

He showed us the springs and seeps bubbling out of the ground that are the very beginning of what eventually becomes the mighty Milwaukee River.

This tiny flow of water coming from the ground never stops, unaffected by summer drought or winter freezes.
Neither does it change in temperature, it is 45 degrees all year round.
That was astonishing to all of us!

spring ephemerals called bloodroot

curious little fungi

horsetail - it used to grow as big as trees before the flood

horsetail is full of silica...dried and powdered it is nutritious to take as tea for healthy joints, bones, hair, nails, and skin

compass curiosity

the kids would have stayed here all day
